Individual Study Rooms

Rooms that have been specifically designated for study.

  • Room 116 (off first floor west corridor, outside the library). Food and drink allowed.
  • Room 124 (off first floor west corridor, outside the library). Only covered beverages allowed.
  • Room 112 (in north stacks on first floor, inside library). Only covered beverages allowed.

All study areas in Memorial Library are considered quiet areas unless otherwise noted. Please lower your voice, keep your conversations brief and turn off your cell phone.

Groups Study Rooms

  • There are twelve group study rooms in the South Stacks on floors 1M, 2M, 4, 4M, 5, and 7.
  • These rooms are designated for people studying together. Quiet talking is allowed.
  • Reserve a room online (a UW NetID is needed). The online form will inform you of what equipment is available in the room.
  • Minimum of two people per room; a maximum of four hours per person per week
  • Presentation computer equipment is available in select rooms.

Petrovich Reading Room - (212) Where is it?

The Michael B. Petrovich Reading Room contains the Library's Slavic & East European Studies Collection, a collection of books, serials, and reference materials in East European, Slavic and Turkic studies. These are for reference use and are non-circulating.

Current Periodicals & Newspapers Room - (240)
Where is it?

Current Periodicals and Newspapers Room houses current issues of some of the more heavily used and popular journals and newspapers

East Asian Reading Room - (412) Where is it?

This reading room contains the East Asian Reference Collection, also current issues of some popular periodicals in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. These are non-circulating materials.

Tibetan Collection books of all formats and sizes are shelved Room 412. These are circulating materials.

Greek and Latin Reading Room - (424) Where is it?

The Greek and Latin Reading Room has a collection of books, serials, and reference materials for use in the room. The collection is dedicated to Ruth Miller Kuhlman, a 1932 UW graduate in classics.

Access: One needs to obtain a key from the Circulation Desk, 1st Floor to enter this room.

West Corridors

1st, 2nd, and 4th floors have tables and chairs in the west corridor areas.

Comfortable Seating

Throughout most of the 2nd floor west corridor—armchairs and small couches in Periodicals Room - (240) Where is it? and south end of Card Catalog Room - (224) Where is it?.

McBurney Learning Resource Room - (377) Where is it?)

Contains adaptive equipment for people with physical, learning, or other disabilities supported by the McBurney Disability Resource Center. Key may be obtained from Circulation Desk on first floor. For a full description of Memorial Library disability services.

Carrels

Open Carrels

Distributed around the perimeters of the south stacks areas. These carrels cannot be reserved.

Locked Carrels

  • A limited number of locked carrels are available for graduate students studying in the library.
  • You must currently be enrolled in graduate school at UW- Madison, or be an Honorary Fellow at UW-Madison.
  • You must have completed at least one year of graduate work. Graduate school credit from another accredited university is allowable, but documentation is required.
  • Carrel assignments are for 18 months for graduate students; for Honorary Fellows assignment is for the period of the fellowship.
  • Assignments are not renewable.
  • Two occupants to a carrel so the space is divided and desktop must be left clear. Failure to comply will result in loss of carrel privileges.
  • Lost and unreturned keys will be assessed a $10.00 non-refundable replacement fee. Failure to pay this fee may result in a block on borrowing privileges and on university records.
  • Online application form: Please indicate on form where (on what floor or area) you would like to be located.
  • You will be notified via email when your carrel has been assigned. To obtain the key bring the email to the Circulation Desk. Staff are not authorized to dispense keys without the email notification.

Please note: Library books kept in carrels or lockers or carrels must be charged out and have current charge receipts in them.
